If you’ve been considering a whole-home air purifier, now is the time to invest.
Today’s homes are more airtight and insulated than ever, which is great for your energy bills. It’s not great, however, for your indoor air quality. According to the EPA, the levels of indoor air pollutants are often 2-5 times higher than outdoor levels of the same pollutants.
Airtight homes can more easily trap harmful contaminants inside your home. Pair that with the rising air pollution levels in California and you have more than enough reason to be worried about your home’s indoor air quality.
In this article, we’ll explain how a whole-home air purifier works. We’ll also highlight the many benefits of installing a high-quality whole-home air purifier in your Southern Californian home.
Let’s dive in.

How a whole-home air purifier works
Instead of only cleaning the air in one room at a time (like portable air purifiers), whole-home air purifiers clean the air throughout the entire home on an ongoing basis.
Some air purifiers work by constantly circulating your home’s air through a series of filters and/or UV (ultraviolet) lights. These components trap and/or inactivate contaminants, leaving behind only clean, fresh air.
There are many different types of whole-home air purification systems, including those that use:
- HEPA filters
- UV lights
- Activated carbon filters
- Electronic/ionic filters
Regardless of the type you choose, you’ll see a variety of benefits from installing a UV whole-home air purifier.
Let’s take a look at a few of the benefits that UV light provides.
Benefit #1: Less contaminants, pathogens and viruses in the air.
Most whole-home air purifiers can help rid your home’s air of dangerous pathogens like bacteria, viruses or other living microorganisms.
UV air purifiers destroy them from the inside out. When pathogens are exposed to UV light, their DNA is damaged, which makes them neutral (i.e. harmless to humans).
If your main concern is removing pathogens from your home’s air, you should be aware of where your UV equipment is placed.
Some high-quality air purification systems that have a high percentage of eliminating airborne viruses, bacteria and even mold include:
- The Reme Halo
- Guardian Air QR+
- Package PHI Unit
Benefit #2: Helps minimize the symptoms of respiratory illnesses
Almost every whole-home air purifier removes airborne irritants that contribute to breathing difficulties. That said, if you or someone in your household has a respiratory illness like asthma, COPD, etc, an air purifier may help minimize symptoms by keeping your air clean and free of potential lung irritants.
Benefit #3: Helps eliminate odors in the home
Air purification systems can help combat lingering odors in your home that come from pets, cooking, smoking, cleaning, etc.
Some systems are a combination of filtration, a Titanium Dioxide catalyst, and UV light which work together to treat the odors in your home. Higher rated MERV filters, including activated carbon, trap larger airborne particulates. The catalyst, along with UV light, breaks down remaining particles purifying the air passing through it by neutralizing and removing odor-causing and “sick-building” contaminants before recirculating the air back into your home
Burgeson’s also offers air purifiers which use an advanced Reflective Electro Magnetic Energy (REME) technology. The REME produces a hydro-peroxide vapor which is dispersed throughout the home and eliminates odors by actively destroying pollutants.
Benefit #4: Surface sterilization
UV air purifiers are typically installed into your heating/cooling system’s air ducts, which allows them to eliminate health risks by neutralizing odors, particulates, air pollutants, smoke and viruses in the air.
Additionally, some UV air purifiers also produce friendly oxidizers including Ionized Hydro-PeroxidesTM for even more advanced sterilization power. When sent through the home’s duct work, this Advanced Oxidation technology allows every cubic cm of air and surfaces to be treated. These oxidants destroy microbials in the air and on surfaces by changing their molecular structure causing them to become harmless.
The Reme Halo is one model that uses hydro-peroxide plasma to eliminate 99% of viruses and bacteria on surfaces, 97% of airborne bacterial and mold reduction as well as 85% odor reduction.
